With a heavy heart, the Fraternity reports the passing of one of Beta’s most accomplished brothers, Robert J. Schaupp, Lawrence ’51, who died April 15, 2024.

Bob’s remarkable journey with Beta Theta Pi began December 5, 1950, upon his initiation into the Gamma Pi Chapter at Lawrence University. Upon graduating, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, spending most of his time at Fort Richardson in Alaska. He spent the bulk of his years as a business executive in the transportation and logistics industry, and his successes earned him the Oxford Cup – Beta’s highest award for professional achievement.

His service to the Fraternity ran the gamut, including as president of the Gamma Pi House Corporation and Fox Valley Alumni Association, General Fraternity President, and member of the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, Promises to Keep Campaign Cabinet and Advisory Council. During his term as General Fraternity President, the earliest steps were taken toward the Men of Principle initiative. He also gifted the Communication Department Conference Room and the grand piano at Beta’s Administrative Office, the latter a nod to Lawrence’s celebrated music program and the decades of Whitman Choral Cups earned by his chapter.

Imbued with a comfortable sense of humor, an ever-present smile and a love for enjoying a Dewar’s on the rocks with his Beta brothers, Bob was always interested in others, listened with enthusiasm and encouraged by example. He is survived by his Beta Sweetheart, Joan, four children, 10 grandchildren (among them former Chapter President Konrad Siebert, Nebraska ’14) and five great-grandchildren.

May Brother Bob Schaupp, Roll No. 392 of the Gamma Pi Chapter and Roll No. 59 of the Zeta Zeta Chapter of Beta Theta Pi, rest in peace. Forever in ___kai___.

Since 2019, the voices of Undergraduate Commissioners have been invaluable in guiding the Fraternity. These brothers represent their student peers with the Board of Trustees and, as of 2022, with the Foundation Board and General Fraternity House Corporation.

Recently named by General Secretary John Stebbins, Emory ’92, six brothers join continuing Undergraduate Commissioners Jack Corby, Elon ’22, and Nathan Satterfield, Michigan ’23, in their prestigious roles. The brothers have already immersed themselves in Fraternity business, having attended the February joint board meetings in Charlotte, as well as engaged with chapter presidents at CPLA in Chicago.

Board of Trustees

Alex Houlton, George Mason ’23

Serving January 2023 to August 2024

Brother Alex, a psychology major from Manassas, Virginia, currently serves his chapter as president in addition to his term as Undergraduate Commissioner. Before elected to his current role, he served as vice president of brotherhood and went on to graduate from the 2022 Wooden Institute. Alex was a member of the George Mason delegation at the 183rd Convention petitioning to recharter as the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Beta Theta Pi.

Liam Traynor, Lawrence ’23

Serving January 2023 to December 2023

Brother Liam, an economics and jazz trumpet student from greater Minneapolis, recently finished his term as president of the Gamma Pi Chapter at Lawrence and sees his time as Undergraduate Commissioner as the next step in his lasting fraternal leadership. In addition to chapter president, he has served as vice president of brotherhood, vice president of recruitment and vice president of education. Liam is a winter session graduate of the 2020 Wooden Institute for Men of Principle, and has attended two Keystone Leadership Conferences, Chapter Presidents Leadership Academy and the 183rd Convention in Atlanta.

Max Gauger, Texas ’23

Serving January 2023 to December 2023

Brother Max studies civil kinesiology and health, applied movement sciences, professional sales and business development at The University of Texas at Austin and hails from Denver. He joins newest slate of commissioners after overseeing new member education for the Beta Omicron Chapter. Max also attended the 183rd Convention.

Foundation Board of Directors

Jack Corby, Elon ’22

Serving January 2022 to August 2023

Brother Jack was one of three brothers to be the first Undergraduate Commissioners to serve with the Foundation Board of Directors when the role was expanded in 2022. His first year in the role saw him working directly with two different Foundation committees and give input on legislation brought to the Convention floor. Previously, Jack has been a Foundation ambassador for the Giving Day Challenge and Sons of the Dragon Club.

“Most of the leadership experiences I’ve had beforehand worked on small changes and events,” Jack said, “but the UGC position is truly looking at the long-term impact and overall picture of the Fraternity experience.”

Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Brother Jack graduated in May 2022 with a bachelor’s in policy studies, and is currently in Bulgaria teaching English as a second language as part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. While a student at Elon, he served as the executive president of the Student Government Association and earned membership into several honor societies. Jack led his chapter four two years as vice president of finance and vice president of programming.

“I’ve been able to meet Beta brothers I never would have,” Jack said. “I have grown professionally by attending board meetings and listening to the discussions there, and I have kept my Beta Spirit alive and well even after leaving my local chapter.”

Christopher “C.J.” Fovozzo, John Carroll ’23

Serving January 2023 to December 2023

Brother C.J. is pursuing a degree in management and human resources, marketing, leadership development and biology at John Carroll, and is from the greater Cleveland area. His extensive Beta leadership includes chapter president and vice president of education. C.J. has graduated from three Keystone Conferences, CPLA and the 2022 Wooden Institute, and represented the Eta Epsilon Chapter at the 183rd Convention.

Steven (Collin) George, Embry-Riddle ’22

Serving January 2023 to August 2024

Brother Collin, a native to Daytona Beach, Florida, graduated from Embry-Riddle with a degree in aerospace engineering and is currently pursuing a master’s in business administration. He helped establish the new chapter on campus in 2020, and later served as vice president of finance. Collin’s Beta Foundation experience includes being an ambassador for the Sons of the Dragon Club.

General Fraternity House Corporation

Nazar Abbas, Miami ’24

Serving January 2023 to August 2024

Brother Nazar is the lone commissioner serving the General Fraternity House Corporation, and is a political science student from Point Pleasant, West Virginia. For the Alpha Chapter, he served as the vice president of recruitment in 2022 and oversaw 36 new members join the chapter roll. Nazar also attended the 2022 Keystone Conference in Indianapolis.

Nathan Satterfield, Michigan ’23

Serving January 2022 to August 2023

As one of the first collegiate brothers to serve alongside the General Fraternity House Corporation, Brother Nathan offered the student perspective on housing strategies. Through the rest of his term, he plans on continuing to advocate for students to ensure chapter members feel safe and comfortable in their homes.

A senior from Chicago, Brother Nathan is graduating this spring with a degree in business administration and plans on working in equity research at Jefferies Financial Group in New York City. He is a former chapter president of the historic Lambda Chapter, and was the third-consecutive Beta to be named IFC president in 2022. His leadership has not only been highly sought after but also highly recognizable at Michigan, being named 2020-21 FSL Emerging Leader and 2021-22 IFC President of the Year.

“Being an undergraduate commissioner has pushed me to think from greater perspectives and has pushed me to understand the fraternity experience from not only the undergraduate perspective, but from the perspective of Beta alumni, other peer organizations, and the greater public,” Nathan said. “The role has also pushed me to think more broadly about various issues that I never had the chance to tackle during my time in chapter and IFC leadership roles.”

Brothers across Beta’s Broad Domain have proven why Beta Theta Pi is the leadership fraternity. For the sixth consecutive year, the chapters boasting leadership at the highest interfraternal level on campus is in the double-digits. Countless brothers serve on Interfraternity Council (IFC) executive boards on their respective campuses, 19 of which sit at the helm of the table as president. The number is tied for the highest recorded by the Fraternity (2018) since keeping track in 2011.

The IFC’s purpose is to advance fraternity on campus and provide interfraternal leadership to the entire community, and it is directly supported by the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).

Cameron Goodwin-Schoen, Case Western Reserve ’24

Soon after wrapping up his term as president of the Lambda Kappa-Beta Chapter, Brother Cameron saw the need of his leadership was not over. He accepted the promotion to president of his campus’ IFC executive board, and has plans to help the Greek community grow in recruitment and presence on campus over his coming term.

Ben Wenner, Cincinnati ’24

Brother Ben finished his term as president of the Beta Nu Chapter and quickly assumed the role as IFC president. This marks the fourth consecutive year for the chapter to have at least one brother serving on the executive board.

James Triplett, Denver ’25

One of Beta’s youngest IFC presidents to be named for 2023 hails from the Alpha Zeta Chapter at Denver. Brother James was elected to the head of the table with several of his Beta brothers by his side. In fact, the Denver chapter controls the six of eight positions on the board with Director of Health and Public Safety Grant Miks ’26, Director of Programming Jameson Stanley ’26, Director of Philanthropy and Community Service Adrian Tunev ’26, Director of Scholarship Andrew Wong ’26, and Director of Public Relations Griffin Young ’26.

Peter Manev, Drexel ’23

Also an outgoing chapter president, Brother Peter (right) became the first-ever IFC president representing the Eta Omicron Chapter at Drexel—founded just five years ago. He was also the first known Beta brother to be elected a 2023 IFC president.

Graham Tunis, Elon ’24

Brother Graham is the third consecutive brother of the Eta Upsilon Chapter to be appointed as IFC president.

Landen Bold, Florida Gulf Coast ’24

Brother Landen continues on his path of fraternal leadership as IFC president, the Theta Eta Chapter’s second time with the top post since 2021. It’s not his first time representing Beta on IFC, having a term as vice president of philanthropy under his belt, in addition to a year as chapter president.

Andres Arzola, Florida International ’25

Florida International has boasted a Beta as IFC president five times over the last six years. Although Brother Andres joined the Eta Gamma Chapter in summer 2022, he stood ready to answer the call for his leadership on campus. He doubles as the chapter’s current philanthropy chair. Homecoming prince and Beta Brother Tony Urrutia ’24, joins Brother Andres on the council’s executive board as the vice president of finance.

“We look forward to uniting all fraternities within IFC, working cooperatively with other student councils, establishing voices for all fraternities at FIU and changing Greek life for all Panthers,” Andres said.

Jordan Rose, Florida State ’24

It’s the second-consecutive year for the Delta Lambda Chapter to have at least one representative on the executive board, this time behind IFC President and Beta Brother Jordan Rose (right). In addition, Brother Ben Engel ’24, (left) joins him on the council as the vice president of public relations.

Emerson Gray, Furman ’25

Brother Emerson is the first Beta brother to be called to head the IFC at Furman, which oversees five fraternities on campus. He is also on his second stint as vice president of programming for the Zeta Lambda Chapter.

Braeden Boyle, High Point ’24

Brother Braeden is the first fraternity man at High Point to lead the Interfraternity Council in consecutive terms. The fraternal community is in a good place thanks to his leadership. During his first term, he oversaw updates to the bylaws, the creation of new educational programming on topics like alcohol, High Point’s largest recruitment and the addition of two new executive positions for membership and diversity, equity and inclusion.

“I am proud to say Greek life is at an all-time high!” Braeden said.

Braeden also worked diligently with High Point’s admissions department to bring fraternity and sorority life to the forefront of their conversation about on-campus activities for prospective students. He continues to maintain great relationships across campus departments for Greek students and IFC, including with campus security, campus enhancement and student life.

Ryan Anderson, Iowa ’24

The leadership of Brother Ryan has not gone unnoticed. Then a sophomore, he was recognized by the university with the Outstanding Student Organization Leader Award in spring 2022. And now, after a year as Iowa’s IFC vice president of recruitment, he gets his chance to run the show.

Jack Harting, John Carroll ’24

John Carroll returned a Beta to the top IFC job in the form of Brother Jack. The last brother of the Fraternity to be president was in 2021. Jack previously showed off his leadership as vice president of recruitment of the Eta Epsilon Chapter, overseeing the largest recruitment year—15 new members—since 2018.

Tim Dieter, Lawrence ’23

Brother Tim stepped up to be the IFC voice at Lawrence for a short time before he graduates this spring, and he is the first president to represent Beta.

Colter Koch-Harbison, Louisville ’24

Brother Colter is the first IFC president representing Beta Theta Pi at Louisville since 2018. He concurrently serves as the Delta Pi Chapter’s vice president of programming in his second term on the chapter executive committee, previously overseeing education.

Nick Zingales, Sacred Heart ’24

Sacred Heart University looks to Beta Theta Pi for leadership, as Brother Nick is the fourth consecutive brother of the Theta Beta Chapter to be named IFC president. He graciously follows in the footsteps of Brothers Marco Lagana ’21 (2020), Jonathan Kennedy ’22 (2021), and Connor Cunha ’22 (2022). Nick previously worked with the IFC executive board on a committee to bring a new fraternity to campus in spring 2022, and was recognized as an emerging leader at the 2022 Greek awards. Within the chapter, he enhanced the new member experience as vice president of education.

Kyle Harris, Virginia Tech ’24

Brother Kyle is sharing the wealth of his leadership in two ways. On top of his election as IFC president for 2023, he was selected by his brothers to lead the chapter as vice president of brotherhood.

Ishan Dhawan, Utah ’24

Utah has had another Gamma Beta Chapter brother guiding the student body government, now the chapter lands the top interfraternal job as well. Recognized with the Fraternity Up & Coming Leader Award in the spring, Brother Ishan (right) is the perfect man to be named president of IFC and lead Utah’s fraternities in 2023. Alongside him is Gamma Beta Chapter Brother Tommy Reynolds ’24, (left) serving as vice president of recruitment.

Cade Gordon, Whitman ’25

Whitman’s first-ever Beta to lead IFC comes in the form of Brother Cade Gordon. He also serves as the chapter’s marketing chair and house manager.

Benjamin Lee, William & Mary ’24

William & Mary calls on a Beta to lead IFC for the first time since 2017. Brother Benjamin has been a steady figure on the council since late 2021 as Beta’s delgate, and currently serves the Zeta Upsilon Chapter as the vice president of risk managment in addition to his IFC posting.

Beta Theta Pi is led by some of the most talented and committed volunteers in the fraternal world, and this year, 10 alumni were elected or appointed to roles within one of Beta’s three boards: the Fraternity Board of Trustees, the Foundation Board of Directors and the General Fraternity House Corporation.

Board of Trustees
John Stebbins, Emory ’92, was elected by the 183rd General Convention delegates to serve Beta Theta Pi as General Secretary, following in the footsteps of long-time Beta volunteer, Wayne Kay, Virginia Tech ’73. For the last three years, Stebbins served as chairman of the General Fraternity House Corporation. Prior, he volunteered as district chief, Fraternity vice president, General Treasurer and Foundation treasurer.
“I hear your voices,” John said in his remarks to the Convention delegates in the legislation hall. “And I hear your voice of confidence in me.”
Joining him as a new face on the board in the trustee transition is Willie Romero, UNLV ’95, as Fraternity Vice President. In addition, Brothers Bill Haywood, Miami ’74, and Robert Beall, Oklahoma ’80, will join them as vice presidents having been elected to serve second three-year terms.
